Minority Organ and Tissue
Transplant Education Program (MOTTEP)
MOTTEP was founded to encourage minority populations who are disproportionately
affected by kidney disease to sign organ donor cards and to discuss
their decision with their family and friends.
In the Greater Los
Angeles Metro Area there is a large Latino population. MOTTEP
seeks to dispel the myths and misconceptions regarding organ donation
and transplantation in the Latino community. The Latino community continues to be disproportionately affected by hypertension, diabetes and end-stage
renal disease, all conditions that could result in the need for
an organ or tissue transplant.
Through a grant from the National Institutes of Health, the collaborative
effort of the National Kidney Foundation of Southern California
and MOTTEP specifically seeks to reduce kidney disease through
a media campaign targeting minority youth, prevent the need for
transplantation by educating the public on diseases and behaviors
which lead to the need for transplantation and continue to increase
the number of minorities who sign organ donor cards, have family
discussions and actually become donors.
A Local Program Coordinator works closely with community leaders
and organizations in the healthcare, media, business, religious
and educational fields to positively address organ donation issues
and misperceptions.
